Uterine Fibroids

Uterine Fibroids: Causes, Symptoms & Non-Surgical Treatment Options

Uterine fibroids are one of the most common benign (non-cancerous) tumours found in women of reproductive age. While many women may have fibroids without ever knowing it, others experience severe symptoms that affect their daily lives and fertility. The good news is that not all fibroids require surgery, and several non-surgical treatment options are available today.
As a Senior Consultant and Director at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, CK Birla Hospital, Gurgaon, and Managing Director of The Mums Clinic, I, Dr. Aruna Kalra, have over 25 years of experience in managing complex gynaecological cases, including uterine fibroids. I specialize in non-invasive and minimally invasive gynaecological treatments, helping women avoid unnecessary surgeries whenever possible.

What Are Uterine Fibroids?

Uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyomas or myomas) are abnormal growths that develop in or on a woman’s uterus. These fibroids can vary in size — from as small as a seed to as large as a melon — and may be single or multiple.

Common Causes of Uterine Fibroids

While the exact cause is still unknown, several factors are associated with fibroid development:

  • Hormonal Imbalance: Estrogen and progesterone promote fibroid growth.
  • Genetics: A family history increases your risk.
  • Age: Most commonly found in women aged 30–50.
  • Obesity: Higher body fat may raise estrogen levels.
  • Diet: High red meat consumption and low vegetable intake may contribute.

Symptoms of Uterine Fibroids

Some women may not experience any symptoms. However, when symptoms do occur, they may include:

  • Heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Pelvic pain or pressure
  • Frequent urination
  • Constipation
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Lower back pain
  • Difficulty in conceiving or recurrent miscarriages

Non-Surgical Treatment Options for Uterine Fibroids

As a gynaecologist with advanced training in robotic and laparoscopic surgery, I always prefer to explore non-surgical methods first, especially for women who wish to preserve their uterus or avoid surgical risks.

That lets save uterus; by removing only fibroids with fine robotic instruments.

  1. Medications
  • Hormonal Therapies: Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists, oral contraceptives, and progesterone-releasing IUDs can help shrink fibroids or manage bleeding.
  • Tranexamic Acid: Helps reduce menstrual blood loss.
  • Pain Relievers: NSAIDs like ibuprofen manage fibroid-related pain.
  1. Lifestyle Changes & Diet

Maintaining a healthy weight and a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help manage symptoms and slow fibroid growth.

  1. MRI-Guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS)

This is a non-invasive outpatient procedure that uses high-intensity ultrasound waves to heat and destroy fibroid tissue.

  1. Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE)

This minimally invasive procedure cuts off the blood supply to fibroids, causing them to shrink over time. It is a good option for women who are not planning to conceive in the future.

  1. Acupuncture and Yoga

Complementary therapies like prenatal yoga and acupuncture may support symptom relief and hormonal balance. At The Mums Clinic, we integrate these natural therapies as part of holistic treatment.

When Is Surgery Recommended?

If fibroids are very large, causing severe symptoms, or affecting fertility significantly, then surgical options such as laparoscopic myomectomy or robotic fibroid removal may be advised. With my expertise in scarless laparoscopic and robotic surgery, even surgical procedures are now far less invasive and involve faster recovery.
